A series of Low-Starch Horse Feeds Formulated for Perfomance
Of late the horse owning public is more aware of caring for an equine to an older age. Yes you can provide healthy nutrition for the aged equine. Also people are caring for equines with multiple metabolic disorders. The following provides basic definitions and offers product options in stock at Be Quick Feed and Farrier. We are pleased to offer the new Defiance line of low starch horse feeds formulated through Ranch –Way.
Defiance Sound Starch is a highly-fortified pelleted horse feed that has a very low level of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC). Sound Starch has tested at only 12% NSC. The low level of carbohydrates included in the Sound Starch formula is safe to offer horses sensitive to sugar and starch. Specific issues may be Cushings (hyper secretion of cortisol), RER (recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis), EPSM/PSSM (equine polysaccharide storage myopathy), horses that are insulin resistant, chronic colic or chronically laminitic. The combination of high quality fat and fiber based ingredients (such as Soybean Hulls, Beet Pulp, Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles, Extruded Soybeans, Ground Flax Seed, Rice Bran, and Soybean Oil)make Sound Starch an energy dense horse feed perfect for high performance athletes, breeding mares and stallions, and thin horses needing to gain weight safely.
Defiance Sound Starch Senior is a highly-fortified pelleted horse feed that has a low level of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC), making it a safe feed for senior horses sensitive to sugar and starch in their diet. It will provide the same low level of carbohydrates along with high quality fat and fiber based ingredients the senior horse needs to maintain weight safely.
Defiance Sound Starch Senior Hi Fat plus is a highly fortified textured feed that has a low level of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC), making it a safe feed to offer senior horses sensitive to sugar and starch in their diet. Similar to the Sound Starch Senior, this feed offers a higher level of fat for those horses needing additional calories, particularly those that are thinning with age. Additionally, Hi Fat plus contains loose beet pulp, this feed has additional soybean oil and added molasses to improve palatibility. The low NSC in Sound Starch Senior Hi Fat plus continues to be a safe feed for horses that are sensitive to sugars or starches.
These products can be moistened or soaked with water for increased consumption, particularly for senior horses, horses that consume feed quickly, or horses that have had no prior experience consuming beet pulp-based pellets. Adjust the amount of feed per day depending on the animal's condition and level of work. Feed in addition to an adequate supply of pasture or hay, fresh clean water, and free-choice white salt. It is advised that if senior horses are able to consume hay, that hay continue to be offered in addition to this feed.

I'm all cracked up!
Warm weather is finally here and we all evaluate how our horse looks after the winter. Times they are a changing. Hair is slicked and our horse seems a little less broke. Strange, I rode just 7 months ago. We look at the horse's feet and notice they seem to be cracked. Hopefully my head being cracked is not the reason I am looking down. Hoof cracks happen for a variety of reasons. The direction and location of the crack can tell you what is going on. Horizontal cracks can happen with inflammation at the coronet band. This could happen if the horse bumped the coronet band stepping over a log or jump. The horse might have had an abscess release at the coronet band. Inflammation can interrupt the growth pattern and create an imperfection in the hoof wall. The good news is that in a year it the crack will grow out and seldom cause any lameness.
Vertical cracks are more varied in cause and severity. Superficial cracks can be called "sand cracks" are easily removed with a rasp. They are more visible in light colored hooves but, don't cause lameness. Quarter and toe cracks refer to the location on the hoof wall. The depth of the crack will determine the severity. Some will go through the outer hoof or "horn" and my bleed. In most cases the coronet band will be pushed up over the top of the quarter crack. You may see the crack separate when the horse loads the hoof. These are more severe. Some treatments used involve floating the area with or without shoes, coronary band grooving or securing steel plates to stabilize the crack. Ask your farrier which technique best fits your situation.
Nutrition, maintenance, conformation, injury and weather conditions all affect quality of hooves. Healthy feet with regular maintenance are less likely to crack. Conformation can affect the load on the hoof and increase risk of cracks. An injury though the coronet band will leave a permanent scar that will need constant attention. Lastly, wet and dry weather patterns will expand and contract feet leaving them cracked and brittle.
What do we do? Topical dressings can help the problem. Be careful to use a product that is non-petroleum based. Petroleum may make the foot too soft leaving you and your farrier less than happy. Good nutrition, movement, frequent maintenance and consistent moisture content will be the keys to strong and durable hooves with a limited number of cracks. Rules of the game:
Please give us at least 48 hours notice that you will be setting up or call the store at 303-660-5010 and leave us your name and phone number.
No fees involved.
The earlier you get here the choicer the spot. The store opens at 8am on Saturday and 10am on Sunday and closes at 4pm.
Setup when you want and break down when you want. Just remember the early bird catches the worm and the best sales are the ones that come after you've left!
Nothing illegal, immoral or fattening can be sold although we'll gladly wave the fattening rule provided we're offered a taste test. (just kidding) Most of all. Come and enjoy the day!

Feed Delivery
Our feed store, Be Quick Feed and Farrier is located in Franktown, Colorado and features Ranch-Way feeds, pet supplies, farrier supplies and farrier service. - Be Quick Feed and Farrier Delivery Policy:
- Delivery constitutes:
- Loading of items ordered at our facility: feed sacks, blocks, tubs or hay bales.
- Unloading and stacking of items in a pre-agreed location that is easily accessible by the rig being used for delivery.
- Normal delivery area is within 30 miles of the store.
- 24 hour notice is needed to schedule delivery.
- Information needed is as follows:
- One ton or less Be Quick will use pick-up size delivery truck.
- More than one ton Be Quick staff will assess the site to confirm accessibility before delivery is scheduled.
- Any delivery order of one ton or more must be prepaid.
- Customer must be on site to accept delivery. (Invoice will be provided).
- Delivery fees are as follows:
- A $20 minimum fee for delivery within 30 miles.
- Fee of $1/hay bale, feed sack or tub delivered.
- Others fees may be assessed for:
- Change of stack location.
- Packing hay or feed by hand or wheelbarrow.
- Moving existing items to make room for current delivery.
- Locating or brokering specialty hay or items not currently being stocked or on site.
- Delivery area greater than 30 miles.
