Look at SweetPro!

Be Quick Bee

"Howdy" This months Be Quick Newsletter highlighted a line of equine supplement that we do carry in stock. SweetPro has designed two "all in one" supplements that address a variety of needs. EquiPride and EquiLix are customized to complement forages fed to horses. Both are noted to improve animals appearance, enhance performance and strengthen there immune function. These products are designed to maximize nutrient uptake in the animals through better absorption. Also minimizing the need for further use of supplements.

Why should we be concerned about absorption, or nutrient uptake in our equine? In horses for example that are routinely feed two to three times a day with added grain products to provide energy used in performance may not have access to nutrient rich forage. Horses naturally forage for feed throughout the day seeking multiple types of grasses and minerals. When we feed high levels of starch and sugar it can force a shift in the microbial population found in the horses cecum there by lowering the Ph. Changes in the microbes and Ph can cause cell damage also increasing risk of colic related to higher acidity.

To manage the equines nutrition given the world we live in you can prep the horses microbial population to better handle there feed. That is where EquiPride lends a hand. The product offers a unique blend of enzymes and prebiotics that aid the horses nutrient utilization within there entire feed ration. How do you know if your horse is getting better absorption and or increased feed efficiency? Look for a healthy shiny hair coat, strong solid hooves, better joint mobility, manageable strength and endurance, bright clear eyes and consistent weight management. Thank you for your interest stop in the store I will be happy to answer questions.

I'm all cracked up!

Pat Hall, Owner of Be Quick Feed and Farrier

Warm weather is finally here and we all evaluate how our horse looks after the winter. Times they are a changing. Hair is slicked and our horse seems a little less broke. Strange, I rode just 7 months ago. We look at the horse's feet and notice they seem to be cracked. Hopefully my head being cracked is not the reason I am looking down. Hoof cracks happen for a variety of reasons. The direction and location of the crack can tell you what is going on. Horizontal cracks can happen with inflammation at the coronet band. This could happen if the horse bumped the coronet band stepping over a log or jump. The horse might have had an abscess release at the coronet band. Inflammation can interrupt the growth pattern and create an imperfection in the hoof wall. The good news is that in a year it the crack will grow out and seldom cause any lameness.

Vertical cracks are more varied in cause and severity. Superficial cracks can be called "sand cracks" are easily removed with a rasp. They are more visible in light colored hooves but, don't cause lameness. Quarter and toe cracks refer to the location on the hoof wall. The depth of the crack will determine the severity. Some will go through the outer hoof or "horn" and my bleed. In most cases the coronet band will be pushed up over the top of the quarter crack. You may see the crack separate when the horse loads the hoof. These are more severe. Some treatments used involve floating the area with or without shoes, coronary band grooving or securing steel plates to stabilize the crack. Ask your farrier which technique best fits your situation.

Nutrition, maintenance, conformation, injury and weather conditions all affect quality of hooves. Healthy feet with regular maintenance are less likely to crack. Conformation can affect the load on the hoof and increase risk of cracks. An injury though the coronet band will leave a permanent scar that will need constant attention. Lastly, wet and dry weather patterns will expand and contract feet leaving them cracked and brittle.

What do we do? Topical dressings can help the problem. Be careful to use a product that is non-petroleum based. Petroleum may make the foot too soft leaving you and your farrier less than happy. Good nutrition, movement, frequent maintenance and consistent moisture content will be the keys to strong and durable hooves with a limited number of cracks. Feel free to give us a call if you have any questions.

Bee good and bee happy.

Hello, Have you been thinking Organic?

I would like review the current notes related to the world of organic. Organic can be related to most any aspect of our lives. Organic as described in Webster's dictionary as an adjective, "noting or pertaining to a class of chemical compounds that formerly comprised only those existing in or derived from plants or animals, but that now includes all other compounds of carbon."

A certified organic product states that it has been inspected by a third party agency to verify authenticity to the customer. A growing number of customers are looking for this authenticity specifically related to foods for themselves and the animals they care for.

I may not be able to speak for the choices available for human food but I will review a new option available for the animals today. First for a product to be certified organic it is inspected by a certification agency. These agencies inspect the products to ensure that no harmful chemicals or prohibited substances have been applied to the field for at least three years. Documentation is reviewed to ensure production operations follow strict standards to qualify for certification. Producers must maintain detailed records of their products they must use ecologically-friendly methods and substances to improve the soil and control pests.

Ranch-Way feed mill in Fort Collins is currently launching a new line of organic feed products. Ranch-Way Easy Feed Organic covers beef, horse, pig and poultry. Retail pricing is completive. Ranch-Way Easy Feed Organic Horse Mix is 12% protein also available in no corn no soy mix, both sells for less then $20.00 a 40 lb bag. I enjoy information on new products ask me for more info.

These producers are required to use ecologically friendly methods and substances to improve the soil and control pests.

Organic farming has been one of the fastest growing segments of US agriculture over the past 10 years. Consumers who choose to buy organic may have concerns about antibiotics, chemicals or hormones in food production. They may support personal and environmental health. Denver, Colorado Springs and Pueblo are listed in the top 10 designated market areas.

Easy Feed Organic includes whole grains, grain mixes, all stock minerals, cattle feed, horse feed, swine feed and poultry feed. With the assistance of an organic certification specialist for the Colorado Department of Agriculture we have an ever increasing base of knowledge.
